Someone recently told me (John) that the StreamTree name sounds “very green,” assuming that it must be an environmental firm or perhaps a woodsy resort. Others link it with the high tech industry and “streaming” media. Truthfully, I don’t mind these associations because I have an appreciation for both technology and the environment. (As I write these words, I am using a state-of-the-art computer system while looking out on a magnificent view of Puget Sound from a friend’s island cabin.) The name “StreamTree” actually came to me one day as I looked out my window at a little stream in the wooded ravine next to my office. A Biblical quote from Psalm One came to mind, which has long been meaningful to me. It speaks of the person who is truly blessed: “…he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither, and in whatever he does, he prospers.” It seemed to me that my mission involves helping people to become “firmly planted”—in their individual lives and in their relationships—like that image of the luxuriant tree by the flowing stream. This is a very special, well-established kind of tree that I refer to as a “STREAM TREE.” Also, using the “StreamTree” metaphor slightly differently, I like the imagery of flowing energy coupled with strength and stability. (In my own marriage, Suzanne tends to be more like the stream - dynamic, flowing, refreshing, lots of energy. I, on the other hand, more resemble the tree, sometimes to Suzanne's frustration!) |
